Peter Michael Winery

n 1982 Sir Peter Michael established the Peter Michael winery on a square mile of rocky volcanic ridges that form the western face of Mount St. Helena in Sonoma County. From the beginning, the wine growing philosophy was modeled on the French tradition infused with a few modern influences: One, the vineyard terroir would be the single most important feature. Two, the wines would be elegant rather than overstated. Three, there would be a hundred-year commitment to the development of a great estate. Given this commitment to the product, only a limited quantity will ever be made. The winery estate is a breath of fresh air, a place I LOVE to visit and a view worth the trip. You must be on their mailing list to enjoy a Tasting/Tour. Next time I have a tasting, I am hoping to try some of their Chardonnay.

Grey Wolf Cellars

Painting by Agata Zaborowski

Joe Sr. and Shirlene Barton started Grey Wolf Cellars and Barton Family Wines i 1994. Sadly Joe Jr. was tasked with the at the age of 23 with carrying on the family legacy after his father trgically passed away in 1998. Joe has made the passing years his lifes mission to carry on his father's legacy and create a distinct style, sourcing from dry-farmed vineyards in the Paso Robles Willow Creek, Templeton Gap and Adelaida District AVA's.

Figge Cellars

Started in 2004 by Peter Figge, the winery produces three varietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. For all Figge wines, Peter is both the vineyard manager and winemaker ensuring the wines are handcrafted. Case volumes vary from wine to wine and the total production for Figge Cellars hovers around 2500-3500 cases each season.

Bybee Vineyards & Habitat

Exclusively Pinot Noir, Bybee Vineyards wines are handcrafted from 100% certified organic grapes, estate grown in the heart of the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley AVA. Cold nights, cool morning fogs, riparian habitat, and sandy-loam Goldridge soils yield some of California’s best pinot noir grapes.

Chateau Diana

The gentleman in the tasting room, Scott, was friendly, knowledgeable and just nice to be around making our visit even better. He told us the tasting room have been open only three weeks which was hard to believe given the fabulous design, product displays and sense of organization. Oh dog friendly too!

Etude

Although Etude is best known for their Carneros estate Pinot Noir and their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from sourced grapes, they do have three white wines that should not be overlooked. The 2010 Etude Chardonnay at $32 sees no malolactic conversion. It has a very nice nose and is rather fruit driven with soft melon. It is more round than brisk. The 2011 Pinot Gris 9$26) is even softer with an aroma of honeysuckle and some peach on the palate. Their 2010 Pinot Blanc ($28) with a light nose, is also softer than the more acidic and sometimes austere Alsatian version. It was nice, though, with some citrus on the palate and good balance. I really like Pinot Blancs and applaud Etude for offering this interesting varietal which is not often encountered in Napa Valley.
